Industry Spotlight: Kobe Goorts, Manager Technology & Development at Sappi Maastricht Mill

Background and Introduction

Please provide a brief introduction to yourself and your current role within the carton and cartonboard industry.

I’m Kobe Goorts, 39 years old and working in the paper and paperboard industry for 16 years. Currently, I serve as Manager Technology and Development at Sappi’s Maastricht Mill. I hold degrees in chemical engineering and business economics. My journey with Sappi began right after my studies when I joined the Maastricht Mill as a shift supervisor, leading one of the production shifts. Since then, I’ve held several positions across different sites, including a brief time in the plastic packaging sector.

How did you first become interested in this field, and what led you to your current career path?

As a graduate, my first job as a shift supervisor gave me the opportunity to explore my strengths—whether I was more inclined to specialize or lead. I quickly became fascinated by the complexity and diversity of technologies involved in paperboard production, but it was clear to me early on that helping teams grow and succeed was what I truly enjoyed.

Your Career Journey

Can you describe the key milestones and experiences that have shaped your career in this industry?

Starting as a shift supervisor was a pivotal moment—it helped me understand both the technical and human aspects of the job. One key milestone was the rebuild of the Maastricht PM6 from a single layer to a multilayer board machine. That was a significant leap in technology and a great learning experience. Later, I took on various leadership roles in quality and process management, pulp production, and energy/utilities. Participating in cross-industry networks also gave me a broader perspective and helped me grow.

Were there any particular challenges or turning points that stand out in your professional journey?

Yes, definitely the PM6 rebuild. I was the line manager responsible for the start-up and operations during that period, and we were implementing the first multilayer headbox on a single forming section. It was a technological first and a challenge we learned a lot from. After that, taking on new roles across different locations helped shape my understanding of the business from multiple angles.

Daily Work and Responsibilities

What does a typical day or week in your current role look like?

In my current role as Technology & Development Manager, every week brings a variety of tasks. I spend much of my time working on product development projects and building business cases with various teams. I also make sure to spend at least one day a week at the paperboard machine to stay connected with the operating teams and their challenges.

Are there any specific projects or initiatives you’ve been involved in recently that you find particularly exciting or innovative?

I’m part of the Sappi Europe Packaging Market Team, which has been a very exciting experience. Coming from an operational background, it’s fascinating to work more closely with the market side and connect customer needs with our technical capabilities. It also gives me a clear view of future industry challenges and where we need to innovate.

Industry Impact

How do you believe your work contributes to the sustainable and environmentally friendly aspects of cartonboard packaging?

A significant part of my role involves overseeing our decarbonisation roadmap. One of our recent initiatives was the installation of an electric boiler to produce steam using green electricity instead of natural gas. Beyond that, we work continuously on developing more sustainable products—this is part of our daily focus.

What trends or developments in the industry are you most excited about, and how do they influence your work?

The need for sustainable packaging is driving innovation at an incredible pace. The entire industry is shifting toward greener solutions, and being part of that transformation—finding solutions that are both effective and environmentally responsible—is something I find very rewarding.

Advice and Inspiration

What advice do you have for individuals considering a career in the carton and cartonboard industry?

Don’t hesitate—just go for it! This industry is so diverse, and there are countless paths you can take. Always seek to expand your skills and don’t shy away from challenging roles. Growth comes from doing, learning, and pushing your boundaries.

Are there any personal or professional accomplishments that you are especially proud of and would like to share?

I’m proudest of the role I’ve played in helping others grow. Whether it’s team members taking the next step in their careers or colleagues finding solutions to complex problems, supporting that development has been incredibly fulfilling.

What is the one reason why you are proud to work in the carton and cartonboard industry?

Because we’re part of a truly sustainable value chain. Our raw materials are renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable—and our production processes are increasingly powered by green energy. We’re not just making packaging; we’re helping build a better future.
