Fighting against food waste, Baden Board present their newly developed “food saver” board.

The Baden Board GmbH from the Murg valley is considered as one of the most innovative producers of recycled board in Europe and is concentrating on developing environmentally friendly packaging solutions. In the second half of this year, Baden Board will introduce a new type of board to the market that can maintain the quality of packed food products for a long period of time. “In short, our board keeps perishable goods healthy and fresh for a longer time,” says Jürgen Schulz, Managing Director and CEO of Baden Board.

The active board has no detrimental effect on the packed food, so it can be consumed without concern.

Fungus such as mould, spores, bacteria and even viruses are prevented from spreading by the carton, thus prolonging the shelf life of perishable goods. The company has documented the impressive impact of that intelligent carton packaging in a one-minute movie, “Baden Board against food waste”, on YouTube.

Independent laboratories are currently working on the analysis and evaluation of the packaging solution. “We will shortly receive approval for direct contact with greasy and non-greasy foods. Our cardboard is also resistant to moisture, which is particularly important when packaging fresh fruit and vegetables,” says Wolfgang Huber, Head of Technology at Baden Board.

Food waste is one of the biggest problems of our time and is hotly debated around the globe. About 1/3 of food worldwide is wasted every year, partly because the shelf life of the packed goods is simply too short. Quite a few foods already show clear signs of aging on their way to the shelves. “Since our independence from Smurfit Kappa, we have begun to develop sustainable solutions for the major challenges facing us.,” says Markus Fehrenbach, Business Development Manager of the Baden Board, and continues: “In addition to discussions with food manufacturers and supermarkets, we are currently establishing contact with the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry, which has created an alliance against food waste. We would like to present our board as a sustainable “food saver” there”.

According to further information from the company, the board can be used in the packaging process without restrictions or limitations and can be recycled as a mono material in the recovered paper cycle without addition of any chemicals.
