Member States have until 25 January to submit written comments.

Paper & Beyond

As part of Cepi 2020 Paper and Beyond conference which took place in November they have presented their main decarbonisation pathways to 2030.
A key part of the manifesto is based around product substitution:
“Our industry can provide climate-friendly substitutes to fossil-based, carbon-intensive products currently on the market, potentially creating a multiplier effect through our expertise in the circular economy”.
Cepi demand SUPD reconsideration

Cepi, supported by Pro Carton and other trade associations, have written to 73 leading members of the European Parliament to urge reconsideration of the scope of the Single Use Plastics Directive which currently includes polymer coated boards.
Important SUP letter sent to EU Commission

Pro Carton along with a coalition of 5 European paper & board based packaging Associations and five National Associations have written a joint letter to Mr Frans Timmermans, EVP of the European Green Deal and Mr Viginijus Sinkevičius, Environment Commissioner, at the European Commission, regarding the (ill conceived) potential damage to our industry that could be caused by the Single Use Plastics Directive (SUPD).
Revision in emissions target
16 September 2020
The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, gave her first state of the union speech and proposed a revision of the EU emissions reduction target from 40% to 55% by 2030. This target is the central piece of the EU's 2030 Climate Target Plan, together with the revised ETS state aid rules.

Joint feedback on EU Roadmap on packaging waste

Pro Carton along with other associations support the Commission’s ambition to contribute to the circular economy through the review of the requirements for packaging and packaging waste. The review should also ensure that the proposed preventive measures will support the functioning of the internal market and free movement of packaging and packaged goods while avoiding the possible negative impact on the environment.

Ecorys’ FCM report
8 July 2020
Ecorys’ report entitled “Study supporting the Evaluation of Food Contact Materials (FCM) legislation” has now been published.
The study provides an analysis of the current EU legislative framework for FCM.
Five main materials are considered a priority by stakeholders: printing inks, paper and board, silicones, varnishes and coatings, and rubber. Positive lists already exist in several Member States for these materials and there is extensive knowledge on these substances within the industry.
