Response from European Commission on SUPD

Cepi have this week received a response from EVP Timmermans & Commissioner Sinkevicius to the joint letter sent on 25 September 2020 co-signed by Pro Carton.  Unfortunately, the Commission confirmed that “the directive covers single use plastic products made wholly or partly from plastic and does not foresee there being any de minimis rule” which means that polymer coated barrier boards remain within scope as far as the directive is concerned.  You will be aware that Member States were invited to respond to the draft by 25th January and we encouraged our members to write to their own governments opposing this part of the legislation.  Although the deadline has passed, we would encourage all members to continue to lobby their own governments as the implementation of the directive is subject to national acceptance.
