Pro Carton ha recentemente intrapreso uno studio che non solo confronta i dati pubblicati sull'impronta di carbonio per tonnellata di materiale, ma esamina anche l'impronta di carbonio su base unitaria.  Sono stati confrontati quattro prodotti, uno in confezione prevalentemente di plastica e uno in cartone, per tre prodotti alimentari e uno non alimentare.  I risultati sono molto positivi per il cartone, anche se si confrontano solo le rispettive emissioni di gas serra fossili.
