The upcoming regulation builds on the synergies between the potential of carbon storage products and the development of a circular bioeconomy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #333333;\">In a circular bioeconomy, CO<sub>2<\/sub> is naturally removed from the atmosphere and stored in growing forests. Before aging trees start to decay and release greenhouse gases, wood is harvested to be transformed into wood products and by-products such as pulp and paper, and the lifetime of fibres is further extended by well-established recycling systems. They store carbon for as long as their wood fibres are re-used, before re-entering biogenic carbon cycles. Carbon going back from the atmosphere to plants, then products, cyclically. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #333333;\">This has been coined under the term of \u2018renewable biogenic carbon\u2019, defined in international standards.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #333333;\"> Cepi, the Confederation of European Paper Industries, has recently published <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com\/ls\/click?upn=lDSJLz7Iw-2FiljaLRNub2fbOpkRMtJ4p8Hd9cfcAQIuMUpOFSh6tFvFhjAh0uxNv8hYXsa1bE4XPlqvBPAAIhrPYXFkD8iipYlloS-2Bw6bPX3cNfF3k4fun3wWsv91NqkEGJ9GwMiXBnNd0nIfLaPu1Q-3D-3DaoM6_bNxJTe9T90Yb6pAY54Q-2BuQ9qi8Svu-2Fha7Bp2y8oz3t6VCHChlAs8OekYPQTQH-2FqcUhiXJQ6pG6na6G4WY00BcHZWeKRrKqc3GGE4dI-2Ft3yvxDOqr-2FfKOErF9J2ou2gP6AlGobqGWWnRhnX8W4rMIiTuOQ4MASeJqCqLklZLUIhC2L-2BNCXaJY-2Bm47sUIcGtrt-2F0ynnoHP-2BUtA52b5z8C-2F998JS9PEl0IV-2FkIJcHNiZ-2FQT6E4ti8vCwZWpaK8kVHMmhhlmCFM75-2FHcufgM9kjLq7Hbh5pfF0lnYagOGsGbXNiAbhkh8QONc9G5K4xt026t3DaYhRdt-2F06cqfbTzUvh33ceBk0NWaU5dD2OAPE-2BwNSFhzpUlMRWlopC-2BKT0KLCQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; color: #00b0f0;\">a position paper explaining how the concept of renewable biogenic carbon relates to the proposal<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #333333;\"> tabled today. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #333333;\">Other \u2018carbon cycles\u2019 are based on the capture and re-use of carbon from finite, fossil resources. While these can also be sustainable under certain conditions, Cepi welcomes that the EU Commission\u2019s proposal for the certification of carbon removal allows for a clear <strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">differentiation between fossil and renewable biogenic carbon.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #333333;\">The proposed regulation plans for the further definition of different types of certification schemes via several delegated acts. As a precursor in the measurement of product-embedded carbon, and with an extensive expertise in the field,<strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"> Cepi is ready to contribute to a methodology for the certification of carbon storage in products<\/span><\/strong>, to be included in a specific delegated act mentioned in the European Commission\u2019s proposal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #333333;\">Forest-based products, together with forests\u2019 carbon sink, already have an overall positive net climate effect of -806 million tonnes of CO<sub>2<\/sub> equivalent annually.<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #333333;\"> This corresponds to avoiding 20% of all EU fossil emissions. An expansion of carbon removals via the substitution of fossil carbon by \u201crecycled [\u2026] carbon from sustainable sources of biomass\u201d, foreseen by the new regulation, could further increase this positive effect. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #333333;\">Quotes<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: #333333;\">\u201cIf we are ready to leave a fossil-based economy behind us, EU regulation supporting renewable biogenic carbon would have to offer a predictable framework, enabling investments needed to reach climate neutrality.
