Jusqu'\u00e0 35 % de la bio\u00e9nergie produite par l'usine est inject\u00e9e dans le r\u00e9seau \u00e9lectrique national du Royaume-Uni.<\/p>\n<p>L'usine, qui produit du carton Incada, est parvenue \u00e0 r\u00e9duire consid\u00e9rablement sa consommation d'\u00e9nergie fossile depuis qu'elle a investi dans une centrale de production combin\u00e9e de chaleur et d'\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 (PCCE) aliment\u00e9e par la biomasse en 2013. Le passage du gaz naturel \u00e0 la biomasse a permis de r\u00e9duire les \u00e9missions de dioxyde de carbone fossile de 190 000 tonnes par an, soit l'\u00e9quivalent des \u00e9missions annuelles de 65 000 voitures.<\/p>\n<p>Les avantages de cette initiative de durabilit\u00e9 ne s'arr\u00eatent pas l\u00e0 : le passage aux \u00e9nergies renouvelables a \u00e9galement aid\u00e9 la communaut\u00e9 locale. Une partie de la biomasse qui alimente la centrale de cog\u00e9n\u00e9ration provient d'exploitations agricoles du nord de l'Angleterre et de l'\u00c9cosse. Le saule se d\u00e9veloppe dans les conditions fra\u00eeches et humides et dans les types de sol de Cumbria, et il est cultiv\u00e9 depuis plusieurs d\u00e9cennies comme culture \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique dans d'autres parties du Royaume-Uni et en Scandinavie. Les saules sont cultiv\u00e9s pour la production de copeaux de bois, qui sont r\u00e9colt\u00e9s et transport\u00e9s avec l'aide d'Iggesund, puis alimentent le syst\u00e8me de cog\u00e9n\u00e9ration de l'usine de Workington.<\/p>\n<p>Plant\u00e9 au printemps, le saule est une culture en taillis \u00e0 courte rotation (TCR) qui produit sa premi\u00e8re r\u00e9colte apr\u00e8s seulement trois ans, et peut ensuite \u00eatre r\u00e9colt\u00e9 tous les deux ou trois ans. Comme les autres arbres, les saules absorbent le dioxyde de carbone de l'atmosph\u00e8re. Ils donnent un rendement \u00e9lev\u00e9, ont une valeur \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique \u00e9lev\u00e9e et am\u00e9liorent le sol pour les cultures suivantes, si l'agriculteur souhaite cultiver autre chose. \u00c0 la fin de la vie productive du saule (20-25 ans), la terre peut \u00eatre retourn\u00e9e \u00e0 la culture conventionnelle.<\/p>\n<p>Le projet Workington Mill a commenc\u00e9 par des recommandations du minist\u00e8re britannique de l'Environnement, de l'Alimentation et des Affaires rurales, selon lesquelles certaines r\u00e9gions de Cumbria se pr\u00eataient parfaitement aux cultures \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques. Au fur et \u00e0 mesure que le projet se d\u00e9veloppait, il est devenu \u00e9vident que ces cultures permettaient \u00e9galement de contrer les effets des inondations et d'accro\u00eetre la biodiversit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>\"Ce fut un parcours passionnant. Nous avons commenc\u00e9 dans une situation o\u00f9 de nombreux agriculteurs \u00e9taient sceptiques. Mais progressivement, \u00e0 mesure qu'ils ont vu notre engagement et nos calculs sur la fa\u00e7on dont ils pourraient tirer un meilleur parti de leurs terres moins fertiles, ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 de plus en plus nombreux \u00e0 se joindre \u00e0 notre projet\", explique Michael McNiven, responsable de la r\u00e9colte chez Holmen Iggesund \u00e0 Workington. \"Encore un autre avantage des cultures \u00e9nerg\u00e9tiques - dans notre cas le taillis de saule \u00e0 courte rotation - est qu'elles donnent un bon rendement sur des terres moins fertiles et ne revendiquent pas des terres mieux adapt\u00e9es \u00e0 la production alimentaire.\"<\/p>\n<p>Cette initiative, qui a cr\u00e9\u00e9 une nouvelle source de revenus pour pr\u00e8s de 200 exploitations agricoles du nord de l'Angleterre et de l'\u00c9cosse (pr\u00e8s de 700 000 GBP ont \u00e9t\u00e9 vers\u00e9s aux agriculteurs en 2020), a re\u00e7u le prix Rushlight Bioenergy Award en 2019.
