Since its inception in 1997, the European Carton Excellence Award has been one of the most important and prestigious packaging design prizes in Europe honouring striking, future-oriented, fibre-based packaging concepts.
We received over 640 entries for the Pro Carton Young Designers Award this year and, for the first time, more than 100 universities were represented. In addition, under the umbrella of the Pro Carton award, ten countries are also giving out national prizes underlining the wide appeal of the competition.
The Pro Carton Student Video Award challenges students to create a short, imaginative video that explores the advantages of using cartons or cartonboard. In its second year, Pro Carton received more than twice the number of entries compared to its inaugural year coming from students from 38 universities across 17 European countries.
At the recent Pro Carton AGM, two new members were formally appointed onto the Pro Carton Steering Group committee, replacing outgoing members from the same companies. Olaf Starken replaced Öystein Aksnes (both Stora Enso) and Rikard Papp took over from Johan Nellbeck (Holmen Iggesund). They join Horst Bittermann (MM Board & Paper), Maarten Florizoone (Metsä), Michele Bianchi (RDM) and Jean-François Roche (GPI) on the committee.
The TICCIT program (Trees Into Cartons Cartons Into Trees) teaches children that trees are a sustainable crop, just like fruit and vegetables. TICCIT highlights the many uses for trees and paper-based packaging, and it underscores the importance of recycling.

Pro Carton's three major awards competitions - the Pro Carton Young Designers Award (#pcyda), the new Pro Carton Student Video Award and the European Carton Excellence Award for packaging professionals - have once again proved to be a tremendous success in 2020.

The winner of the UK Young Designers award that promotes young talent in the packaging industry has been named as Ravensbourne University student, Chloe De La Fontaine by BPIF Cartons, the UK association representing the carton and cartonboard industry.
