Cartonboard and Cartons at Interpack

Text

Interpack is one of the world’s largest packaging exhibitions and Pro Carton was 2011 once again present with a stand. A brilliant stand design and a wide spectrum of information ensured a high rate of visitors. Innovation and sustainability were the focus.

Whilst the number of visitors was slightly down as compared with the last 2008 trade fair, with over 166,000 trade visitors of which over 100,000 came from outside Germany, the organisers feel that this was one of the most successful Interpacks they have ever run. All the halls were fully occupied and 2,700 exhibitors from 60 countries took space at the exhibition.

In contrast to 2008, Pro Carton joined forces with three other associations on their stand to present a wider view of the paper and board packaging industry. The other associations present on the stand were The Association of German Paper and Board Manufacturers (VDP), the Association for Paper Processing (WPV) which includes the FFI, the German Carton makers association, and the Association of Paper Technology Specialists (PTS). As a result of this co-operation on the stand visitors could see and learn about a wide range of paper and board related products and issues.

The stand was admired by visitors with many commenting that it was one of the most eye catching stands in the exhibition. With a backdrop of plain white cartons with the word “board” cleverly picked out in black and a largely black and white theme, it certainly attracted visitors to the stand and during the event there was a constant stream of visitors from all over the world comprising a brand owners, retailers, designers and a wide range of other people with an interest and involvement in packaging. The press were also frequent visitors and Pro Carton made available a wide range of material in the press room that was well appreciated.

One of the key elements in the design of the stand was the use of the winning cartons from the 2010 Pro Carton/ECMA Annual Carton Award competition. These proved to be a big draw and as well as being able to see all the winning cartons, visitors were also able to take away the award booklet which has detailed information on each of the winners. The official last date for entries for the current competition 2011 is 10 June.

The recently published Pro Carton Magazine was also in great demand and, during the course of the exhibition, well over 5,000 Pro Carton booklets and publications were taken by visitors. The other popular booklets were those concerning environmental issues such as the report on carbon footprinting. Many visitors signed up for the E-news service and those who are already signed up commented how useful they find this monthly summary of matters of interest in the cartonboard and carton sector.

The stand also seemed to stimulate visits from students who were particularly interested in all the environmental information Pro Carton has available and also showed enthusiasm to enter the Pro Carton Design competition. Whilst this has not been run for a couple of years it is now underway with entries due in by February 2012 with the results being announced later that year.

Besides Pro Carton, many renown representatives of the cartonboard and carton industries were also present at the Interpack: Stora Enso and Mayr Melnhof Karton from the cartonboard area and amongst the carton manufacturers present were Benson Box, Edelmann, Faller, Mayr Melnhof Packaging, Seda and also Contego – previously known as Nampack.

Following on from the success at the 2008 Interpack, the “Innovationparc Packaging” was again held this time bringing together many companies in the value chain under the heading of “Quality of life” and covering such aspects as Health, Meaning, Aesthetics, Simplicity and Identity. Here too several cartonboard and carton manufacturers were showing. A & R Carton, RLC Packaging, Van Genechten and Korsnäs were amongst those participating in this section of the exhibition. The Innovationparc proved to be a great success both with visitors and the participating companies as it provided a unique forum that offered space for constructive talks and creative ideas.

Overall, the Interpack was characterised by the successful networking of the cartonboard and carton industries, especially with the branded goods industries and the retail trade – both in terms of joint developments of new solutions, but also in terms of sustainability. Reason enough to visit the Interpack 2014 – the precise date will be announced shortly at
