Environment
Cartonboard and cartons are manufactured from a sustainable and renewable resource and as such are the most sustainable form of primary packaging available. Over 50% of cartons used in Europe are made of recovered fibre. This fibre is collected across Europe both from households and from commercial premises and is then used once again as a raw material for cartonboard.
Of the world consumption of wood only 12% is used for the manufacture of Paper and Board and of this 12%, only one tenth is used for carton manufacture . Over 90% of the wood needed by the Paper and Board Industry in Europe comes from European forests. No rain forest trees are used. Sustainable forestry is practised in Europe and more trees are planted than felled . The Paper and Board Industry uses only the thinnings from the forests. Cartons are recovered and recycled into new cartonboard on a very wide scale but are also biodegradable and useful for waste to energy schemes.
In view of these facts it is no surprise that cartons are regarded as the most environmentally friendly form of packaging and their usage grows each year.
